At the start of 2015, Marika Hackman released We Slept At Last, a pretty stupefying first album that reminds the listener of the early works of Beth Orton. We listened to the opening tracks of this record from the former Burberry model, who has been hailed by Laura Marling, and it was as if we were crossing a ghostly landscape, dotted with soaring hills and peopled by mysterious characters. Ghostly like her voice, with its marvellous melancholy... The acoustic instrumentation predominated but sometimes gave way to a snatch of electro or new wave. With I’m Not Your Man, the Brit shows off her talents - and her claws! The essence of her art remains introspective and vaguely folk, but the packaging of this second album is much more poppy. No pact with any commercial devil, just a raw spirit and ardour in the guitars, and in the record's overall production. It is a motley mix: we move from a grunge feel to shoegaze textures before returning to something closer to Britpop. And even across these great distances, Marika Hackman's real talent shines through. A beautiful confirmation. © MD/Qobuz
