More than just a posthumous album, Forever is clearly a tribute to Phife, a member of A Tribe Called Quest who died in 2016 from severe diabetes. At the helm of the project is DJ Rasta Root, a lifelong friend who saw it as his duty to put together a dream team capable of honouring one of the greatest rappers of his generation. To bring Phife Dawg back to life, he called upon 9th Wonder, Busta Rhymes, Redman, Dwele, Illa J, Little Brother and, of course, his good friend Q-Tip. The latter covers Dear Dilla, one of the last singles Phife released in 2014 (which is itself a tribute to the beatmaker J Dilla who had worked with the group in its early days). Throughout the album, you can hear audio clips from the late rapper’s childhood. For example, at the start of Cheryl’s Big Son, two simple words ring out: “In heaven.” The vibe is predominantly boom-bap, firmly anchored in the 2000s without giving into a boring retro sound. This album is proof that Phife’s career is by no means limited to A Tribe Called Quest, and that he’s influenced a whole generation of rap artists. The vocals were mainly recorded in his twilight years, and their optimism shows he found it easy to look on the sunny side of life.
