After the smash hit that was the self-produced Bad Juice (2018), followed by the Pursuit of Ends four years later on the independent Californian label Anti-, High Pulp are continuing to develop their hybrid jazz fusion, psychedelic post-rock and experimental electro universe. Their masterful new project makes use of more or less the familiar ingredients. Built mainly around Bobby Granfelt's drums, which draw most of their grooves from electro and hip hop, as well as Antoine Martel and Rob Homan's skilfully interwoven layers of keyboards, we do see a deft tone shift from highly orchestrated neo-fusion to more retro-futuristic moods in postmodern style of Sun Ra. On half the tracks, the Seattle collective enriches its usual orchestration (Scott Rixon on guitar, Andrew Morrill on alto saxophone and Victory Nguyen on tenor and soprano saxophones, flute and trumpet) with the addition of different guests each time.
Free tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis (Dirty Mouth), harpist Brandee Younger (Solanin), guitarists Jeff Parker (Unified Dakotas) and Kurt Rosenwinkel (Fatigue) and electronic music composer Daedelus ((If you don't Leave) The City Will Kill You) - each adds their own personality and the aesthetic to the collective discourse of the project that is masterful in its widespread syncretism and constantly excitement. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
