Bach's Two- and Three-Part Inventions are often thought of as repertoire for student pianists, and they certainly have a lot to teach about keyboard technique and voice leading. But, as pianists from Kempff to Gould have demonstrated, the Inventions contain subtleties of line, nuances of harmony, and interplays of rhythms that challenge the most seasoned interpreter. The real challenge for the player is to reveal the depths without forgoing wit and playfulness. Till Fellneradmirably rises to that challenge on this recording. Captured in ECM's typically crystalline digital sound, Fellner's performances are clear and lucid, as well as witty and subtle. Clean articulation combined with balanced tone and a virtuoso technique reveal Fellner's keen grasp of form and content. Coupled with an equally brilliant performance of Bach's G major French Suite, Fellner's readings of the Inventions and Sinfonias are on the same level as the finest of the past and anyone who savors great Bach playing will likely enjoy this disc.
