Zooey Celeste
Zooey Celeste sets angsty, character-driven reflections against an atmospheric, lo-fi pop injected with washes of art rock, chamber pop, and post-punk. A companion work to a metaphysical novel, his Nick Hakim-produced debut album, Restless Thoughts, appeared in 2023.
Raised in Southern California, Zooey Celeste started writing songs after hearing the Beatles for the first time at the age of eight. He went on to study poetry and creative writing, then later took up the guitar, piano, and harmonium and played in series of indie bands that ultimately left him feeling unsatisfied. With a title track inspired by a scene in his novel, a metaphysical thriller during which the father of the main character is involved in a car accident, Restless Thoughts was produced by longtime friend Nick Hakim at Hakim's studio in Brooklyn. With cited inspirations ranging from J.D. Salinger to Iggy Pop and Tyler, The Creator, the completed Restless Thoughts included contributions from bassist Jake Portrait (Unknown Mortal Orchestra), drummer Abe Rounds (Andrew Bird, Devendra Banhart), and singer/songwriter Tei Shi. It was released in November 2023 on ATO Records.
