WL
The music of Portland, Oregon's experimental pop trio WL (pronounced "well") ranges from cathartic blasts of noise to serene meditations. Built around the graceful voice of singer/bassist Misty Mary and the textural washes of multi-instrumentalist Michael Yun, WL established the fundamentals of their sound on 2013's Hold, a set of songs that touched on indie rock, dream pop, and minimal electronics. The band made the most of their improvisation-based songwriting on 2016's hypnotic Light Years and refined their approach further on 2020's uplifting ADHD, which proved that empathy is just as vital to their work as boundary-breaking sounds.
WL formed in January 2012, when Mary and Yun began playing together after meeting in Portland's indie music scene. They soon added drummer Stevie Nistor to the fold and started playing shows. That July, they made their recorded debut with the single "Impermanent," which appeared on Death Party Records. Inspired in part by a trip Mary took to Europe, the band's first full-length, Hold, expanded on their eclectic indie rock and dreamy atmospheres and arrived in July 2013 on their own Prospect & Refuge label.
WL's next album, Light Years, took a while to come to fruition. Beginning as an improvised score they performed at a 2012 screening of René Laloux's 1988 animated film Gandahar, the band recorded it in 2013 and then spent several years collaborating with artists and filmmakers to create visuals for each song. Ultimately, the album was released in October 2016 on XRAY Records. After Mary spent some time in the like-minded synth outfit Dan Dan, WL returned with November 2020's soothing ADHD. Yun and Mary's first album with guitarist/drummer Adam Breeden, the record also featured Golden Retriever's Jonathan Sielaff and reflected Mary's coping with grief and anxiety in its comforting sounds.
