WindSync
The wind quintet WindSync combines a varied repertory, stretching from contemporary classical works to folk and pop, with an irreverent attitude. The group has recorded for the Bright Shiny Things and Azica labels.
WindSync was formed in April 2009 at Rice University in Houston, Texas. The group has gone through several personnel changes, but flutist Garrett Hudson was a founding member. The other members as of 2024 are oboist Noah Kay, clarinetist Graeme Steele Johnson, bassoonist Kara LaMoure, and hornist Anni Hochhalter. The name WindSync, playing on that of the boy band NSYNC, was chosen in September of that year, and the group gave its first public performance the following month. In 2010, the group launched its first U.S. tour. WindSync has been especially visible in residencies, holding one at the Grand Teton Music Festival in Wyoming as early as 2012. In 2013, the group made its debut at Carnegie Hall in New York. WindSync released its debut album, Sketches, on the Disc Makers label in 2016.
WindSync won the Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition in 2012 and the 2016 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, taking a prize as well at the 2018 M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition in Michigan. The group has performed widely at major venues, including the Metropolitan Museum In New York and the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center, in addition to the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. WindSync has been known for efforts to connect directly with audiences, often performing from memory (something rare among chamber groups). Its 2023-2024 season includes appearances at the Shalin Liu Performing Arts Center in Massachusetts, Chamber Music Tulsa, and the Phoenix Chamber Music Society. WindSync recorded the album All Worlds All Times in 2022 for the Bright Shiny Things label, featuring music by Marc Mellits, Ivan Trevino, and Miguel del Aguila. The group moved to Azica in 2024 for the album WindSync Plays Miguel del Aguila: Music for Winds.
