The Soil
An a cappella trio from South Africa, the Soil are recognizable for a style that is intricate and agile yet restrained. Their 2011 debut, The Soil, was a hit and led to collaborations with Ladysmith Black Mambozo and rapper Kwesta.
The Soil were formed in Johannesburg in 2010 by the remaining members of Particles of the Soil, a larger a cappella group started by high school students seven years earlier. Down to a group of four, composer/vocalist Ntsika Ngxanga, beatboxer/vocalist Luphindo Ngxanga, and vocalists Buhlebendalo Mda, and Samthing Soweto (aka Samkelo Lelethu Mdolomba) recorded the Soil's 2011 eponymous debut album. Soweto then left the group to concentrate on his work with the Fridge.
Released on the Native Rhythms label, The Soil LP went platinum in South Africa, and a three-piece Soil issued Reflections: Live in Joburg later in the year. Their second studio album, 2014's Nostalgic Moments, included guest spots by the likes of Ladysmith Black Mambozo and Khuli Chana. Sony issued an expanded edition of The Soil in 2015, and 2016's Echoes of Kofifi (Native Rhythms), featured appearances by Theo Songstress Matshoba and Kwesta.
