The Glam Metal Detectives
Conceived by Peter Richardson (of television show The Comic Strip Presents fame), the Glam Metal Detectives launched one of the first ‘synergised’ multi-media assaults of the mid-90s. A seven part comedy series which began its run on UK television on 23 February 1995, the plot concerned a million-selling rock band who as well as performing world-wide, also found time to solve simple crimes (generally perpetrated by their arch enemy, Royston Brulcade). Described in some quarters as ‘Scooby Doo with guitars’, it assumed the same sort of stupidity in rock bands familiar to viewers of Spinal Tap or Bad News. The unfortunate actors/musicians recruited to work on the project were: Gary Beadle (ex-Seventh Wonder), Mark Caven, Phil Cornwell, Doon Mackichan, Sara Stockbridge and session guitarist George Yiascumi. Released just four days after the first programme aired, their debut single, ‘Everybody’s Up’, was backed by a suitably atrocious version of the Osmonds’ ‘Crazy Horses’. An album conducted with a similar absence of merit followed it.
