The Bunch Of Fives
The Bunch of Fives were notable only for featuring drummer and legendary wildman Viv Prince shortly after he had left his position in the Pretty Things. The group recorded one single for Parlophone, "Go Home Baby"/"At the Station," in August 1966. These were passable, but ordinary, mod rock tunes and are remembered only by collectors. According to guitarist Mick Wayne, they also provided the sounds of Jeff Beck smashing his guitar in the famous scene of the Yardbirds playing in a club in the film Blow Up.
In addition to Prince and Wayne, the group also featured keyboardist Dave Stewart, who went on to progressive rock groups Egg and Hatfield and the North. The Bunch of Fives, minus Prince, evolved into Tickle, which made one spectacular psychedelic-pop non-hit in 1967, "Subway (Smokey Pokey World)." Wayne led Junior's Eyes, who made an obscure album at the end of the '60s and briefly served as David Bowie's backing band. "Go Home Baby" was reissued on the British Invasion rarities compilation 60s Back Beat, while "At the Station" showed up on the unauthorized, much harder to find 1960s British Invasion anthology Visions of the Past Vol. III. One final observation: "Go Home Baby" bears the writing credit of Joshuax Worm. Could there have possibly been a real guy with that name?
