Stephen Gosling

Pianist Stephen Gosling is especially active as a player of contemporary chamber music in the New York area. He also performs internationally as a concerto soloist and solo player. Gosling was born in Sheffield, England. He moved to New York in 1989 at age 18 to attend the Juilliard School, earning bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees there. His principal teacher at Juilliard was Oxana Yablonskaya. At Juilliard, Gosling earned the Mennin Prize for Outstanding Excellence and Leadership in Music and the Sony Elevated Standards Fellowship. He performed four times as a concerto soloist with Juilliard groups in pieces by Stravinsky, Alfred Schnittke, Paul Schoenfield, and John Corigliano, and since then, he has specialized in 20th century and contemporary music. Gosling made his recording debut in 1995, joining composer and pianist Joan Tower on guitarist Sharon Isbin's album Joan Tower: Black Topaz. In 2001, he and pianist Eric Huebner released the album Music for Two Pianos on the Centaur label. Gosling has been a member of several leading chamber ensembles in New York and beyond, generally playing contemporary music. These include a three-year stint with the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble and is a co-founder of the American Modern Ensemble. Gosling is also a member of Ensemble Sospeso and the New York New Music Ensemble, and he has appeared in guest roles with such groups as the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Orchestra of St. Luke's, Speculum Musicae, and Da Camera in Houston, Texas. Gosling has appeared in theater productions and collaborated with various modern dance companies. He has recorded for a large variety of labels oriented toward contemporary music, including Innova, Toccata Classics, and John Zorn's Tzadik, where in 2020, he released a recording of Zorn's The Turner Etudes. By that time, his recording catalog comprised more than 30 items.
