Spiritual Cramp

Serving a stylishly volatile mix of hardcore punk, ska, reggae, post-punk pop, and mod sounds and images, San Francisco's Spiritual Cramp are a band with a commitment to fiercely engaging music. Led by lead singer and songwriter Michael Bingham, Spiritual Cramp made their recorded debut with a 2017 EP, Mass Hysteria, which showed that music can hit hard without resorting to fast and loud cliches. Their first album, Television, followed in 2018, and 2023's Spiritual Cramp added a tighter attack and more sophisticated production to the band's arsenal. Taking their name from a song by the Los Angeles goth/punk band Christian Death, Spiritual Cramp was formed by Michael Bingham, who was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. He was a teenager when he first heard Madness, and the band became his gateway into punk rock and related phenomena, and he was soon absorbing music however he could, including occasional rounds of shoplifting at local discount stores. By 2011, he'd left the Northwest for San Francisco, where he joined a punk band called No Sir. In 2012, he released a single as a member of the band Creative Adult, featuring Mike Fenton on bass. Bingham and Fenton started writing songs together, and while Bingham would also briefly work with a band called Profile, it was his musical partnership with Fenton that had the most lasting impact. In 2017, Bingham launched Spiritual Cramp; he composed all the original material in collaboration with Fenton, and filled out the lineup with guitarists Jacob Breeze and Stewart Kuhlo, dancer and percussionist Max Wickham, and drummer Blaine Patrick. Working with producer and engineer Grace Coleman, a valuable ally, Spiritual Cramp issued a four-song 7", Mass Hysteria, before 2017 was out, and 2018 saw the release of another single and an 18-song album, Television, issued by the Canadian label Deranged Records. The latter featured tongue-in-cheek covers of classics by the Sex Pistols and Billy Bragg along with their originals. The album was well-received and soon Spiritual Cramp had a busy touring schedule, sharing bills with Viagra Boys and Militarie Gun and building a significant fan base in the Bay Area. Another four-song EP, Here Comes More Bad News, was released in 2021, and soon the band revamped their lineup, with guitarist Nate Punty replacing Jacob Breeze, drummer Julian Smith replacing Blaine Patrick, and percussionist and keyboard player Jose Luna taking the place of Max Wickham. In 2023, Spiritual Cramp booked time at San Francisco's Different Fur Studio to record their second album. The production team of Grace Coleman, Michael Bingham, and Mike Fenton was joined by Carlos De La Garza, whose résumé includes work with Paramore, Bad Religion, Fitz and the Tantrums, and M83. The finished album, Spiritual Cramp, was issued by Blue Grape Records in November 2023.
