Nicola Hitchcock
UK singer-songwriter Hitchcock began her career in 1993 with an album which inspired a Folk Roots journalist to recommend it as ‘a remarkable debut album of old-fashioned qualities with modern attitude.’ Though a self-evidently basic recording conducted in archetypal bed-sitter songwriter mode, it included several compositions of worth, including the taut lover’s exorcism, ‘Pick Up Your Coat’ and the assertive, confessional narrative, ‘What You See Is What You Get’. Despite the rudimentary guitar playing and limited range of her voice, the disarming honesty and wit of the lyrics made the album enjoyable.
