El León de Oro

From an informal group of singers to a professional choir of over 30 voices, El León de Oro (The Golden Lion) has risen to prominence as one of Spain's most important vocal ensembles, displaying virtuosity and artistry in its wide-ranging repertoire. Formed in 1997 in Asturias, Spain by director Marco Antonio García de Paz, the group has won many awards at competitions, performed at international music festivals, and received critical praise for its polished renditions of choral works from the Renaissance era to modern times. Usually heard as an a cappella ensemble, El León de Oro has worked with early music specialist Peter Phillips and his choir, The Tallis Scholars, and performed at such festivals as Logroño's Early Music Festival, the International Festival of Sacred Art in Madrid, and the Ancient Music Festival of Aranjuez. Yet El León de Oro has also performed with Spanish orchestras, including the Asturias Symphony Orchestra, the Oviedo Filarmonía, the Symphony Orchestra of Bilbao, and the period group Forma Antiqva, in works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Fauré. The choir's first recording on Hyperion, Amarae Morti, a survey of sacred music of the Renaissance, was released in 2019.
