Dallas String Quartet

A dynamic crossover ensemble, the Dallas String Quartet are known for their genre-bending fusion of contemporary classical and pop. Utilizing both traditional and electric-stringed instruments, the DSQ have garnered acclaim for their bold reinvention of modern pop hits by Queen, Coldplay, Pharrell Williams, and others. They have showcased their sound on albums like 2010's Eclectric, 2011's Red, and 2014's Between Us. Following their 2020 holiday-themed EP Christmas Album, the DSQ released a handful of 2021 tracks, including covers of Dua Lipa's "Love Again" and Billie Eilish's "When the Party's Over," as well as the Latin jazz number "Sabor" featuring pianist Jesús Molina. Named after their Texas home base, the Dallas String Quartet is led by violist and founder Ion Zanca. Born in Romania, Zanca relocated to the United States in 2002 where he initially studied music at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Around 2005, he moved to Dallas to study at Southern Methodist University. There he formed a traditional string quartet to play weddings and other events. Over time the group evolved, adopting both electric and acoustic instruments and adding more contemporary pop and rock material to play alongside their classical repertoire. Along with several line-up changes, the DSQ grew from a quartet to a full-fledged band with the addition of guitar and drums. All the while, Zanca has remained the sole constant member and musical director, bringing on board an international cadre of virtuoso performers. In 2010, they released their debut album, Eclectric, which featured covers of songs by Coldplay, the Beatles, the Verve, and Astor Piazzolla. Red followed a year later and again featured a mix of modern pop hits, including a take on Adele's "Rolling in the Deep," Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger," and the Guns N' Roses classic "Sweet Child O' Mine." Tours followed, including appearances alongside luminaries like Josh Groban, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Chicago, and others. The DSQ's third album, Between Us, arrived in 2014 and featured a cover of Coldplay's "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall," along with takes of Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" and Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." In 2020, they released the holiday-themed EP Christmas Album. More standalone tracks appeared in 2021, including covers of Dua Lipa's "Love Again" and Billie Eilish's "When the Party's Over." They also released the Latin jazz-tinged "Sabor" featuring pianist Jesús Molina.
