Cutty Ranks

Cutty Ranks (born Philip Thomas) shot to fame in the early '90s with his no-holds-barred microphone style. Beginning his recording career for producer Winston Riley of Techniques Records, he soon moved to Miami with Skeng Don, learning his craft from Supercat and Nicodemus. After releasing the highly influential single "The Bomber" for the Shocking Vibes label, he consolidated his popularity with "Pon Me Nozzle." His "rock-stone" ranting attracted the attention of London-based Fashion Records, and his 1990 recording, "The Stopper," became an international reggae hit. One of the foremost exponents of the '90s ragga deejay style, Cutty scored a massive hit stateside with "Limb By Limb," but was largely unable to cross over like his peers Buju Banton and Shabba Ranks.
