Clowns

Clowns are an Australian hardcore punk outfit whose ferocious sound balances melody with a thrashy sense of experimentalism. Based in Melbourne, they released a trio of records on the eccentric Poison City label in the mid-2010s, building up their international profile ahead of 2019's Nature/Nurture, their first for Fat Wreck Chords. It became Clowns' first album to reach the Australian charts and earned them an ARIA Award nomination. A four-year gap preceded their next release, 2023's Endless, which explored themes of immortality and bore a greater metal influence. Clowns formed in Melbourne in 2009 and released a self-titled EP the following year. The initial quartet consisted of singer Stevie Williams, guitarist Joe Hansen, bassist James Ahern, and drummer Jake Laderman. From the start, they fused a vicious mix of hardcore punk with punchy melodies and occasional sonic left turns. After signing with Melbourne indie Poison City Records, they made their full-length debut in late 2013 with I'm Not Right. A follow-up, Bad Blood, appeared in early 2015, along with a personnel change. Jarrod Goon replaced Hansen on guitar, and Hanny Tilbrook took over bass duties from Ahern the following year. They also added a second guitarist, Will Robinson. This retooled lineup recorded Clowns' third LP, Lucid Again, which came out in 2017. By this point, the band had earned a reputation for their raucous live shows and visceral albums that encompassed noisy punk, garage, and metal with engaging pop melodies. Clowns signed with American punk label Fat Wreck Chords, which helped them gain more widespread exposure for 2019's Nature/Nurture. The album reached number 31 on the ARIA pop chart and was nominated for Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album at that year's ARIA Awards. As the global pandemic altered working conditions at the start of the next decade, Clowns continued to evolve. They began recording themselves at home, working on a new set of songs centered around resilience, strength, and the idea of immortality. Robinson was replaced by guitarist Cameron Rust, and the band completed work on their fifth album. Endless was released in October 2023 by Fat Wreck and peaked at number 36 on the ARIA charts.
