Bearings
Hooky Canadian pop-punk combo Bearings rose out of the Ottawa underground with a series of respected independent EPs before signing a deal with Pure Noise Records to issue their full-length debut, Blue in the Dark, in 2018. They pumped up their sound on 2020's larger than life Hello, It's You, then scaled it back down on 2023's The Best Part About Being Human, their back-to-basics third LP.
The quartet of vocalist Doug Cousins, guitarist Ryan Culligan, bassist Collin Hanes, and drummer Connor Kington met at Algonquin College in Ottawa, where they were all taking the same music industry arts program. By 2014, they had begun playing together as Bearings, bonding over a mutual love of bands like blink-182 and the Menzingers. At the beginning of 2015, they released their first EP, Higher Ground, followed a year later by the three-song Home Is… EP. Now an established touring band, Bearings notched their first label deal, signing with Pure Noise to release their third EP, 2017's Nothing Here Is Permanent. Major tours with bands like Four Year Strong and Less Than Jake followed over the next 12 months as the quartet continued to work toward a full-length release. Finally, in October 2018, Bearings issued their debut long-player, Blue in the Dark. By collating the sound of their earlier EPs, their debut helped elevate their profile, and before long they teamed up with producer Courtney Ballard to work on a follow-up. Mike McKerracher joined as the band's drummer in 2019.
Released in 2020, Hello, It's You collates an amped-up version of Bearings' attributes, with more thump, bigger hooks, and arena-sized choruses. Songs like "Sway" and the pop-inflected "Super Deluxe" fared well on the streaming networks, satiating fans during the first year of the global pandemic until the band was able to tour again. Pure Noise later released a deluxe version of Hello, It's You in 2022 while Bearings were in the studio working on new material. Rather than continuing to scale up, the band opted for a more classic sound and did away with the synths and studio adornments of their previous release. The result was 2023's The Best Part About Being Human, a crunchy return to pop-punk form meant to be played loud and live.
