Mysterious, feminine, experimental, and always compelling, Jenny Hval has been pushing the musical envelope forward since 2006 (initially as Rockettothesky before releasing music under her own name). True to its title, The Practice of Love emphasizes warmth, lushness, and softness, quite unlike 2016’s Blood Bitch which connected menstrual blood to vampire imagery or 2015's Apocalypse, girl and its sardonic opening question, "What is soft dick rock?" (yes, really). That said, The Practice of Love retains Hval's signature use of occult imagery, spoken word poetry, and experimental electronic sonics, while introducing 80s-come-2019 synth grooves (some you could even dance to!), free-jazz inspired saxophone licks, and atmospheric vocal backdrops. The cohesive sonics are in part thanks to Hval’s cast of collaborators, with musicians Anja Lauvdal (synths), Espen Reinertsen (saxophone) and Lasse Marhaug (electronics) and guest speakers Vivan Want, Laura Jean Englert, Félicia Atkinson forming a group that sharpens and draws out the best in her sound. © Eric Benoit / Qobuz

Nick Cave: Bad Seed

Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds remain one of the most prolific adventures of the post-punk era. Since the late 1980s, the vast magnetism of the Australian singer has swirled through violent paroxysms, fulminating covers, piano ballads and sweaty rock'n'roll. As the years went by, Cave became more and more of a crooner, part way between a punk Frank Sinatra and an austere Johnny Cash.

Tuareg Blues: The Rock Oasis

Since the Tuareg group Tinariwen released their first official album in 2002, entitled “The Radio Tisdas Sessions”, their guitar-soaked electric music has become a category of rock - one that is recognised and respected from Bamako to Los Angeles. This international success has allowed many musicians from the Sahara to get their music heard. And Western rockers have often been attracted to this poetic music emanating from the sand dunes and rocky expanses.

David Byrne, a burgeoning mind

He was the leader of the Talking Heads, he recorded punk funk and South-American music, republished gems of world music, spent countless hours cycling through large cities throughout the world, and dabbled in dozens of other activities. What is truly going on in David Byrne’s head?
