Vol. 3 in BIS' collection of the complete works of Sibelius isn't for everybody. Indeed, considering it contains the Finnish composer's nearly unknown works for voice and orchestra, it probably isn't for anybody except his deepest and most dedicated fan. The biggest work here -- the five-movement, 80-minute-long Kullervo Symphony -- was banned from performance during the composer's lifetime by the composer himself, and the vast majority of the rest of the music here is even more obscure. Still, the superlative performances here by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra under Osmo Vänskä or the Gothenburg Symphony with Neeme Järvi or Jorma Panula with the YL Male Voice Choir, the Dominante Choir or the Jubilate Choir, plus such great soloists as baritone Jorma Hynninen and soloist Marianne Häggander, will make as convincing a case as is imaginable for the music. Captured in clear and crisp stereo or digital sound by BIS and packaged with extensive notes, plus full texts and translations, this set will be mandatory for truly committed Sibelius fans.

Album Description

Danny Elfman in Ten Albums

From fairy tales to wacky comedies, from the most extraordinary orchestral works to understated pieces, for almost forty years now Danny Elfman has been crafting his unique sound and injecting it into Hollywood productions by the likes of Tim Burton or Gus Van Sant. We look back over ten albums from his career, exploring both his essential works and less well-known compositions.

Wilhelm Kempff: The Most Human of Pianists

An artist of another time, Wilhelm Kempff (1895-1991) believed in inspiration: he took on music as if it were a religion, with a respectful enthusiasm for the masters that came before him. With his velvet touch, sense of phrasing and storytelling quality, Wilhelm Kepff’s art was like that of a waking dream. Half poet, half divine, during a time when expression of emotion triumphed all. He recorded many times the works of his favourite composers, in particular his ‘god’ Beethoven, for whom Kempff is well known and left behind three complete sonatas in keeping with his own maturation and the evolution of his recording technique.

Jonas Kaufmann in 10 Key Albums

With his flattering physique reminiscent of a handsome romantic, German Jonas Kaufmann has successfully modernised the image of opera tenors, long considered as unrepentant tumblers… Beyond his powerful and versatile voice, Jonas Kaufmann possesses an immense repertoire in several languages, masters all styles of opera, from Wagner to Verdi or Puccini, and sings the lied or the French opera to perfection. A great admirer of Fritz Wunderlich, he started his career “the old fashioned way”, in a company touring around small German theatres before taking off on his own towards a prodigious career. After a chaotic year in 2017 due to a ruptured blood vessel on his vocal chords, Jonas Kaufmann seems to have fully recovered and is working on countless new projects. Qobuz looks back on his career, highlighting 10 albums.
