Louder Than Words

Lionel Richie

R&B - Released April 16, 2021 | Mercury Records

After the greatest-hits collection Back to Front disappeared without a trace in 1992, Lionel Richie spent four years making Louder Than Words, his first album for Mercury Records. Although there are some slight attempts to incorporate new jack and hip-hop influences into Richie's sound, Louder Than Words relies on his trademark balladeering, which remains his forte. All of the weak moments on Louder Than Words are ill-advised forays into rap -- to put it bluntly, he can rap about as well as Snoop Dogg can sing. Although the ballads aren't as strong as his late-'70s and early-'80s standards, they are nevertheless pleasant, which makes the record a worthwhile purchase for fans. © Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

Permanent Waves

Rush

Rock - Released January 1, 1980 | Mercury Records

Hi-Res
Rush's 8th album, 1980's Permanent Waves, is where the little Canadian trio that could, became one of the biggest rock acts on the planet. Much of the success is thanks to the album's best known track "The Spirit of Radio"—proof that a prog-rock band known for marathon epics could also pen short(er) catchy singles. "Spirit" also marked the band's initial experiment with adding reggae flavors to its music. The new shorter, lower approach made another pair of songs here—"Freewill" and "Entre Nous"—into instant Rush highlights. The first of their albums recorded at Quebec's Le Studio (a magical locale where their next career-defining album Moving Pictures was also cut), Permanent Waves is also where a small tweak—bassist Geddy Lee singing in lower registers—removed another obstacle to the band's wider success. Up to that point, Lee's unnaturally high nasal yowl had been too much of an acquired taste for some listeners. Reissued with improved sound and precious, unreleased live material (including the shortest version of 1975's "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" ever recorded) for its 40th Anniversary, Permanent Waves is a band solidly in their most creative period, growing increasingly confident in their artistry. © Robert Baird/Qobuz

My Music Is Hot

Lalomie Washburn

Funk - Released June 22, 2018 | Mercury Records

Although Lalomie Washburn has provided background vocals for many R&B artists and has written songs for greats like Chaka Khan and Buddy Miles, she never got very far as a solo artist. And that isn't because of weak material -- although 1977's little known My Music Is Hot falls short of being a gem, it's a decent soul-funk outing. The title is accurate; Washburn is definitely a hot-blooded vocalist, and sweaty numbers like "Double Funkin'," "Freaky Strangeness," and the Latin-flavored "My Love Is Hot (Caliente)" make it clear that she is very much a belter. With the right exposure, My Music Is Hot might have done well. But the LP, which came out on the Casablanca-distributed Parachute label, received very little attention -- and it wasn't long before you could find unopened copies selling for as little as 50 cents in small mom-and-pop stores. Out of print since 1979 or 1980, My Love Is Hot hasn't been reissued on CD and probably never will be. © Alex Henderson /TiVo
