A curveball thrown by this most-electric African neo-blues outfit who owe as much to John Lee Hooker, Jimi Hendrix and Ali Farka Touré as they do to Bombino or Tinariwen! Introduced to the public by Damon Albarn thanks to his project Africa Express, Songhoy Blues is one of the most interesting Malian acts around today. You can tell that these four young musicians are well-marinated in a diverse range of influences and their Music In Exile which came out in 2015 was the perfect statement of their pleasing stylistic gluttony. With Résistence, we get another chance to be blindsided and swept away by this powerful trance and its electric and guitar supports, which swerves from furious and inspired pieces to quasi-shamanistic ballads. Politically-committed music (as the title suggests) for which the crew from Bamako brought in one Iggy Pop (Sahara) but also London rapper Elf Kid (Mali Nord). © MD/Qobuz

The Great History of Malian Music

Mandingo traditions or urban intersections, ancestral chants from the griots or dance bands on the day following the Independence, the family tree of Malian music possesses deep roots, leafy branches and a strong sap. Let’s take a look back at the fascinating history.

And then Nirvana Killed Rock

In 1987, Nirvana was born: the most unexpected punk swerve of the end of the 20th century. A rocketing career, international hits, hordes of fans and a tragic epilogue for this worldwide phenomenon. And what if Kurt Cobain’s band was none other than the last band in the history of rock? The ultimate generational phenomenon of genre, if not its last myth.

Tuareg Blues: The Rock Oasis

Since the Tuareg group Tinariwen released their first official album in 2002, entitled “The Radio Tisdas Sessions”, their guitar-soaked electric music has become a category of rock - one that is recognised and respected from Bamako to Los Angeles. This international success has allowed many musicians from the Sahara to get their music heard. And Western rockers have often been attracted to this poetic music emanating from the sand dunes and rocky expanses.
