The Cold War Kids deliver the final chapter of their New Age Norms trilogy. New Age Norms 3 is, like its two predecessors released in 2019 and 2020, an album of relatively few tracks. Volume three consists of eight songs of contagious spontaneity, the urgency of which can be felt through beautiful vitality. The latter is undoubtedly also the result of a new sharpening of the band's sound with the recent arrival of several new members such as David Quon and Matthew Schwartz. The pair have taken their places and can now cut loose after the few years where the group has been searching for a new equilibrium... the very lively Always is a fine example of this. The song is just over two minutes long, and you can feel the energy of a band experiencing rebirth, and all the freshness of new beginnings. The Cold War Kids have been going almost twenty years, and as they sing on Times Have Changed, the times have indeed changed, and the band with them. But the music is still there and the inspiration has not ebbed either: far from it. Hence the beautiful ballad Nowhere To Be, into which Willett has poured all of his talents as a composer and lyricist. Right away, you can imagine the track performed on stage, with its mix of blues, rock and crooner-style vocals. Then it's back to the great plains of rock, bombastic as can be, on Wasted All Night, which would not feel out of place on a Queen album, with its decadent Broadway feel and its rousing orchestrations and parodies of pure rock'n'roll, a genre which remains the soundtrack to the great spectacles of our times. The concerts, the guitars, all the noise and the sweat, throwing each other around all night as if there was no tomorrow...
