‘Divide & Conquer’, ‘Stendhal Syndrome’ and ‘Heel/Heal’: you could say Idles have their own formula (and they know how to use a good metaphor). Brutalism, the name of their first album released in 2017, refers to the concrete that has been plastering Europe since the post-war boom years. Joe Talbot isn’t afraid of getting straight to the point, and he’s got a lot to say: he talks about his mother, exhausted from her work; post-Brexit England; the rotten bourgeoisie... In this album, nothing fades into the background, with a predominant rhythm section that’s never drowned out by the guitars. The thirteen tracks on this masterful album are unforgiving. These five working-class musicians pump out raw, unadulterated punk music here, often reminiscent of the Eagulls. The slow lamentations of ‘Slow Savage’ display carnage in a state of grace, further enhanced by a recent explosive live performance at Glastonbury. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz
