She might be the daughter of painter and video maker Kiki Picasso and the sister of filmmaker Kim Chapiron, she might have assisted M83, Jabberwocky, La Caution, Spleen, Oxmo Puccino, Casseurs Flowter and also Birdy Nam Nam, and done a lot of other things, it’s high time we judged Mai Lan for her own accomplishments and let go of all those considerations. It’s a rather easy thing to do thanks to the second album of the elusive singer. Elusive like the original style of this Autopilote which, even if it has an overtly pop aspect, doesn’t hesitate to delve into electro, rock, hip hop and R&B. It’s a tartan that is in the end in line with its time, pushing away all labels, formatting and prejudice. Mai Lan has above all the intelligence to strip down the structure of all her songs and never overdo it.
