Mozart: Piano & Winds

Ma'alot Quintett

Kwartetten - Verschenen op 15 oktober 2021 | CAvi-music

Hi-Res Booklet
The quirky musicians of the Ma'alot Quintet, founded in Germany in 1986, devote their latest recording to Mozart's well-known Quintet in E major for Piano and Winds, K. 452, adding arrangements by their clarinettist Ulf-Guido Schäfer. They have chosen the Overture from Der Schauspieldirektor, K. 486 (The Theatre Director), the Symphony No. 26 in E flat major, K. 184 here arranged as a wind quintet, and, adding a piano to their wind ensemble, a very successful arrangement of the Piano Concerto No. 17 in G major, K. 453 with the pianist Markus Becker as soloist, whose Mozartian touch is supreme.Purists may think what they like of it, but this was a common practice in the eighteenth century and much earlier, when a work was arranged according to the exigencies and the instrumental availabilities of the moment.Mozart is in no way slighted by such arrangements, especially since our five musicians offer a truly exciting interpretation here. The overall sound is perfectly homogeneous, the expression is always precisely articulated and the dialogue between the piano and the wind instruments is perfect. The only truly original work on this album. the Quintet for Piano and Winds, benefits, as one would have expected, from an interpretation that is as highly polished as it is expressive. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Prémices, Songs by Debussy, Schönberg, Strauss and Rihm

Sheva Tehoval

Duo´s - Verschenen op 24 september 2021 | CAvi-music

Hi-Res Booklet
A sumptuous recital. Winner of the Queen Elizabeth Competition in 2014, the young Belgian soprano Sheva Tehoval, with her absolutely magnificent timbre, notably offers us, through subtle sequences, three youthful cycles by three modern major composers. In 1888, Debussy (aged 26) wrote his collection of six melodies Ariettes oubliées in the same year as Strauss (then 24) wrote his Mädchenblumen. Ten years later, Schönberg (aged 25) composed his 4 Lieder, Op. 2.  A short foray into the contemporary era, with a triptych from 2004, Wolfgang Rihm's Drei Hölderlin-Gedichte—the second number Hälfte des Lebens is very moving.Sheva Tehoval seems particularly at home with French melodies, which she says she has loved since her teens. Her diction is close to exemplary, and her timbre distils an irresistible light throughout the eleven melodies by Debussy, with whom she begins and ends her recording. Impressive! In the slightly naïve, sometimes moody style of Schönberg's Op. 2, Sheva Tehoval reveals a beautiful and expressive touch, transcending in particular the final Waldsonne. However, it is to Debussy's forgotten Ariettes oubliées that one returns most quickly, as Sheva Tehoval seems to have heard Mélisande herself (Il pleure dans mon cœur), with her gentle sensuality.A magnificent discovery, which makes us impatient for the next recorded recitals of the Belgian soprano. © Pierre-Yves Lascar/Qobuz

Janáček: Piano Works

Olena Kushpler

Klassiek - Verschenen op 27 augustus 2021 | CAvi-music

Hi-Res Booklet
Ukrainian-born Germnan pianist Olena Kushpler has been fascinated by the music of Leoš Janáček ever since her youth. First by his vocal works, only then discovering his incredible piano repertoire later in her life. When she heard this music, she immediately grasped the great Czech composer’s basic aesthetic principle: he wanted to write a music of truth. Virtuosity for virtuosity’s sake had no place in his approach. This album includes some of the composer’s most celebrated works for solo piano, including the beautiful miniatures of from the collection On an Overgrown Path. © CAvi-Music

Ligeti: Études pour Piano

Cathy Krier

Klassiek - Verschenen op 27 augustus 2021 | CAvi-music

Hi-Res Booklet
Hungarian composer György Ligeti (1923-2006) is probably best known to the public through the use of his music in the iconic Kubrick film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Nevertheless, he is known as “one of the most innovative and influential among progressive figures of his time”, responsible for seminal works which are still regularly performed by today’s greatest artists. Written over a period of more than seventeen years, his Études for piano test a pianist virtuosity to the limit. They combine serene moments of beauty with feats of technical prowess, as can be heard in pieces such as White on White or Arc-en-ciel, where the music rises and falls in arcs that seem to evoke a rainbow. © CAvi-Music

Brahms & Zemlinsky: Piano Trios

Feininger Trio

Trio´s - Verschenen op 18 juni 2021 | CAvi-music

Hi-Res Booklet
The Feininger Trio, members of the Berliner Philharmoniker, present the first in a new series of albums pairing each of the three piano trios written by Brahms with a work by another Viennese composer: Alexander Zemlinsky, Ernst Krenek, and Erich Wolfgang Korngold, respectively. Brahms’s piano trios are among the genre’s crowning achievements, and the Feininger Trio were interested in exploring how the piano trio genre developed in the master’s wake. As Alexander Zemlinsky put it, young composers attempted to outdo one another by writing in a vein as Brahmsian as possible. Young Zemlinsky knew Brahms and enjoyed the older composer’s support. He was not Brahms’s pupil, but his early Piano Trio, Op. 3 has much in common with Brahms. © CAvi-Music

Beethoven: Coriolan Overture & Eroica

Ensemble Cristofori

Symfonieën - Verschenen op 18 juni 2021 | CAvi-music

Hi-Res Booklet
Tempo, accentuation, phrasing, or structural architecture are not the first thing that strikes the listener when he listens to Arthur Schoonderwoerd’s performances of classical orchestral music for the first time. Instead, the first thing we can notice is that the music sounds different. The orchestra is unusually small. You might want to judge whether this is good or not, but that will not truly help you deal with the phenomenon in itself. Apart from the winds – in the usual line-up as called for in the score – the string section is barely larger than a string quartet. It is pointless to dispute whether this is preferable to a large orchestra. More significant is the striking effect this has on the senses. If you want to do justice to Schoonderwoerd’s interpretation concept, it is best to start by focusing on what you are hearing. © CAvi-Music
