Wen-Sinn Yang
Cellist Wen-Sinn Yang has traveled to festivals and concert halls around the globe since winning the Geneva International Music Competition in 1991. He has been a member of several chamber music groups and is also an important educator.
Yang was born in Bern, Switzerland, to Taiwanese immigrant parents in 1965. He attended the Hochschule für Musik Zürich, studying cello with Claude Starck. Yang went on to the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin, where his principal teacher was Wolfgang Boettcher. He took master classes from János Starker and Wolfgang Boettcher. At 24, he became the principal cellist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and he performed as a soloist with the group. In 1991, he scored a breakthrough with his win at the Geneva International Music Competition and began an international career. He also taught at the Hochschule für Musik in Saarbrücken, Germany, from 1995 to 1997, and in 1998, he was named artistic director of the Domleschger Sommerkonzerte in Thusis, Switzerland. Yang made his recording debut in 1999 on the album Music for Three on the Koch International label, joining violinist Martin Mumelter and pianist Werner Bartschi.
Yang has appeared with major orchestras, including the Shanghai Symphony, the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, performing under such conductors as Lorin Maazel, Mariss Jansons, and Wolfgang Sawallisch. He is known for his work in researching obscure 19th century cello concertos by the likes of Carlo Alfredo Piatti, Adrien François Servais, and Karl Davydov, and he also often programs modern works by such composers as Sofia Gubaidulina, Gordon Chin, and Isang Yun. In 2004 or 2005, Yang joined the faculty of the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich, and he remained active there as of the mid-2020s. He has a substantial catalog as a soloist and chamber player of recordings on Arts Music, CPO, Oehms, and other labels. In 2023, he moved to the Onyx label for a recording of Mieczysław Weinberg's Concertino for cello and string orchestra, Op. 43bis, with the Jewish Chamber Orchestra of Munich.
