The Obsessives
Heirs to '90s garage punk as well as the guitar lo-fi of bands like Pavement and Sebadoh, the Obsessives were formed in September 2012 by Washington, D.C. natives Nick Bairatchnyi (vocals/guitar) and Jackson Mansfield (drums). The duo started the band while in their mid-teens, and self-released the EPs Bad Friends and Manners, both in 2014. Still in high school, they signed with Near Mint, which issued their full-length debut, 2015's Heck No, Nancy, which was named after a line in Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five. After relocating to Philadelphia, and nearing the end of a gap year taken to decide whether to start college or commit full-time to their band, they self-released the EP A Great Menace Weighs Over the City in 2016. Continuing to gain fans and attention in the indie music press, the Obsessives then signed with Lame-O Records (U.S.), Dog Knights (U.K.), and Cooking Vinyl (Australia) for their second full-length, The Obsessives, released in March 2017.
