Seer
Austrian schlager band Die Seer broke through to mainstream success in their homeland in the mid-2000s, when their albums began regularly charting within the Top Five, sometimes reaching number one. Though most easily classified as simply schlager, the band's style is unique, incorporating aspects of Austro-pop as well as volksmusik; perhaps the most accurate classification would be volkstümlicher schlager. Formed in 1995, Die Seer are led by songwriter/guitarist Fred Jaklitsch (aka Alfred); other bandmembers include Astrid Wirtenberger (vocals), Sabine Holzinger (aka Sassy; vocals), Friedrich Hampel (aka Spitz; vocals), Thomas Eder (guitar), Manfred Temmel (guitar), Jürgen Leitner (accordion), Alois Huber (keyboards), Dietmar Kastowsky (bass), and Wolfgang Luckner (drums).
Die Seer released their debut full-length album, Über'n See, in 1996 on the independent label Tyrolis, followed by Auf + der Gams Nach (1998). The band's third album, Baff! (1999), featured their first hit song, "Wild's Wasser," a longtime fan favorite. Gössl followed in 2000, and then in 2001 Die Seer released their first album to chart, Guats G'fühl, which peaked at number 26 in its third week of release, logging 16 weeks on the Austrian albums chart overall. This breakthrough success triggered a Top 20 best-of album, Das Beste der Seer: Wild's Wasser (2002), compiling the highlights of the band's tenure on Tyrolis.
A month after that initial best-of release, Die Seer made their Sony Music debut, Junischnee (2002), featuring a re-recording of "Wild's Wasser," now titled "Wilds Wossa 2002." The album debuted at number two on the Austrian albums chart and logged over 100 weeks overall on the chart, reentering the chart several times over the years, doing so as late as 2007. A non-album holiday single, Eiskristall (2002), was also released during this period of sudden popularity, the title track peaking at number 22 on the singles chart.
The popularity of Die Seer continued in subsequent years. In 2003 the band released a new album, Aufwind, which topped the albums chart and spawned the number 13 hit single "Es Braucht 2," and Tyrolis issued a second best-of compilation, Das Beste der Seer, Vol. 2, which also charted (at number 34). In 2004 the band released the chart-topping Über'n Berg (2004), followed by Lebensbaum (2005), which charted number two and spawned the number three hit single "Sun, Wind + Regen." After yet another best-of release, S' Beste!, this one a Top Five compilation of the band's Sony Music highlights, Die Seer released another chart-topping album of new material, 1 Tag (2007). Hoffen, Glauben, Liab'n followed in 2009.
