Sam Riggs

Sam Riggs may be a transplant to Austin, Texas, but with his band, the Night People, the singer/songwriter creates a dusty, muscular sound that's unmistakably Red Dirt country. Riggs demonstrates an inclination for big, poppy anthems (reflecting his early love of Garth Brooks) that separates him from the rest of the Red Dirt artists, but his defiant spirit remains anchored in Texas. Riggs boasted a strong, arena-filling sound on 2016's Breathless, while 2019's follow-up Love & Panic favored a cleaner pop-leaning approach. A native of central Florida, Riggs moved to Austin at the age of 19 in 2007. Working manual labor, he also performed at local cafes and bars, workshopping his songs. In 2010, he released his debut EP, Hairpin Trigger Heart, which earned some airplay on Austin's local KVET station. Another EP, Lighthouse, followed in 2012, and he then formed the supporting band the Night People, releasing the full-length Outrun the Sun in 2013. Over the next few years, steady work helped grow his audience, setting the stage for the arrival of his second album, Breathless, in February 2016. Riggs supported the release with plenty of touring. In February 2019, Riggs signed a publishing deal with Major Bob Music, then continued to gig and work on new music, releasing the seven-song EP Love & Panic in June 2019; it was accompanied by an acoustic version of the EP subtitled "Heartstrings." In February 2020, he issued the digital single "Game Boy."
