Rat Fancy

Los Angeles indie pop act Rat Fancy started out as a bedroom pop duo but slowly evolved into a more high-energy band as they expanded their membership and progressed in their songwriting. Their 2019 debut full-length, Stay Cool combined their internal songwriting with the fuzzier edges of '90s indie influences. Rat Fancy was formed in 2016 by guitarist/singer/songwriter Diana Barraza and multi-instrumentalist Gregory Johnson. The earliest material the duo worked up was dreamy, lo-fi bedroom pop heavy on synths and reverb, and their 2017 EP Suck a Lemon was made up of songs in that vein. The band graduated from recording project to live act with a performance at South by Southwest that year. After entering the live arena, Rat Fancy grew to include bassist Dan Fernandez and drummer Matt Sturgis. Their sound quickly shifted away from wistful bedroom pop to something more hard-hitting and fuzzy. They teamed up with producer David Newton (formerly of the Mighty Lemon Drops) to capture their new, higher energy songs on 2019's Stay Cool.
