Plas Johnson

Plas Johnson's not only one of the great honking R&B saxophonists and session musicians, he's a fine bebop and hard bop soloist. Johnson's father was his earliest teacher, helping him learn soprano sax, and his brother Ray later recorded with him in the '50s. Johnson was a prolific studio player in the late '50s and through the '60s, working with artists as diverse as Harry Belafonte and Shorty Rogers. He was featured doing breaks, snippets and short but effective solos on numerous R&B and early rock and roll dates. During the '60s, Johnson was heard on Henry Mancini's "Pink Panther" soundtracks and albums. He also recorded with Red Callender and Earl Palmer in 1960. Johnson was in Merv Griffin's studio band in 1970. His jazz roots and abilities were showcased during the '70s, as Johnson worked with Ray Brown and Herb Ellis and led his own combos. He did sessions with Brown, Ellis, Bobbie Hall, Jake Hanna, Mike Melvoin, Jimmie Smith and the Capp - Pierce orchestra. Johnson has recorded for Capitol and Concord among others. He has a couple of sessions available on CD.
