Neumeyer Consort
The Neumeyer Consort is a major presence on the early music scene in western Germany, often accompanying choral works. The group has recorded frequently for various German labels.
The Neumeyer Consort was founded in Saarbrücken, Germany, in 2007 by Baroque cellist and conductor Felix Koch, Baroque violinist Barbara Mauch-Heinke, and harpsichordist Markus Stein. All three remain active with the group, and Koch has continued to serve as artistic director as of the early 2020s; Stein serves as managing director. The name honors harpsichordist Fritz Neumeyer (1900-1983), one of the pioneers of historically oriented performance in Germany. The three founders make up the core of the Consort, but it can expand to the size of a large Baroque orchestra according to the requirements of the repertory being performed. In 2008, Koch founded a Neumeyer Chamber Choir, and the Consort has also been associated with the Gutenberg Chamber Choir and Gutenberg Soloists from the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. Soon after its founding, the Consort became Ensemble-in-Residence at the summer vocal workshops mounted by that university. The Neumeyer Consort has emphasized choral music in its programming but also performs instrumental music; its recording debut came in 2010 with the album Platti: Ricercate & Sonate, devoted to composer Giovanni Benedetto Platti, released on the Christophorus label.
The Neumeyer Consort has been in demand at European festivals where early music is played, appearing at such events as the Tagen Alter Musik im Saarland, the Magdeburger Telemann-Festtagen, and the Schwetzinger Festspielen des SWR. The group has also performed at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, has toured South Africa, and performed at the Norfolk Concerts in Britain. The Consort's work has a strong educational component; in 2010, it established the Neumeyer Consort Scholarship Academy, which offers young up-and-coming musicians the chance to make music with members of the ensemble. In addition to Christophorus, the group has recorded for Oehms Classics, Rondeau, and CPO. For the latter, the Neumeyer Consort launched a cycle of Telemann's complete church cantatas with the Gutenberg Soloists in 2020; the second volume in the series, covering the composer's so-called Französischer Jahrgang cantatas of 1714 and 1715, appeared in 2023.
