Montana Skies

Montana Skies is the duo of cellist Jennifer Adams and guitarist Jonathan Adams. They are based not in Montana but in the Atlanta, GA, area, and they came to their brand of original instrumental music when they were students at the University of Georgia at Athens in the mid-'90s; they wanted to form a musical as well as personal collaboration, but they found that the classical repertoire for cello and guitar was almost nonexistent. So they began arranging classical pieces and composing music of their own. They began to perform in university settings and moved on to house concerts and outdoor events. Their eponymously titled debut CD gained substantial radio airplay, including a hearing on National Public Radio's Echoes program. Montana Skies toured the U.S. and appeared in Seoul, Korea, in 2004 while preparing for the release of their second disc, Chasing the Sun; that release featured a guest appearance by progressive bluegrass mandolinist Butch Baldassari. The two members of Montana Skies each maintain independent careers as well. Jennifer Adams has performed and recorded with Georgia's ARCO Chamber Orchestra; she has studied the cello in Italy with Mario Brunello and in the U.S. with Bernard Greenhouse and Truls Mørk, among others. She has also performed with the pop and rock groups Soul Miner's Daughter and Submersed. Jonathan Adams is the author of Getting into Fingerstyle Guitar (Mel Bay, 2004). His album guitarist included music ranging from Bach to the Beatles and was praised by New Age Voices magazine as a "sensational debut"; it was the first of five recording releases as of 2004.
