Hi-Res Booklet Onderscheidingen 5 Sterne Fono Forum Klassik
Here’s a repertoire that everybody knows about yet is completely neglected: the Bach cantatas. Granted a few have gained some importance, mostly thanks to the vocal qualities of singers who have seized it for a few decades – Fischer-Dieskau and Elly Ameling to name a few – while some complete works adorn aficionados’ collections. There is however enough content in these cantatas to “make up” about a dozen Passions or Oratorios on par with some of those we already know. Bach himself didn’t refrain from drawing from them to recycle arias, ensembles, choirs and sinfonias. Among some of the most famous, honoured in the 1950s by Fischer-Dieskau, are two cantatas for baritone: Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen (1726) and Ich habe genug (1727), both written with oboe and string accompaniment. It’s precisely with this roster in mind that the Freiburger Barockorchester serves Matthias Goerne, a disciple of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and… Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, him again! The German baritone, a regular on the world’s most prestigious scenes, doesn’t refrain from lending his immense voice to this almost-chamber music by giving it a character far removed from the lyrical style required by Berg, Wagner or Strauss. In addition, still with the oboe in mind, the recording includes the Concerto in A Major for Oboe d'amore BWV1055R, a modern reconstruction from a keyboard concerto in A major, which there is every reason to believe was itself recycled by Bach from an older concerto for oboe d'amore. The remarkable Katharina Arfken plays the oboe for the cantatas and the oboe d’amore for the concerto. © SM/Qobuz

Hi-Res Booklet
Shrouded in an awkward acoustic which is hardly customary for Berlin's Teldex Studio, the latest recording by Matthias Goerne and Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho (First Prize in the 2015 Chopin Competition) is devoted to twilight Lieder by Wagner, Pfitzner and Richard Strauss.Twilight ("Abendrot" in German), an essential component of German Romanticism, expresses the deep, dark side of the human soul, often in a tragic or dramatic tone, barely tempered by an oppressive light that prematurely withers the flowers of memory. The famous Wesendonck-Lieder, for which Wagner was inspired by an impossible love whose harmonies foreshadow those of Tristan and Isolde, find in Matthias Goerne's deep voice a performer to equal their inspiration. The German baritone has long been a supporter of the music of Hanz Pfitzner, a contemporary of Richard Strauss who is often rather academic for Latin ears. What a pleasure to discover this bouquet of Lieder, which evoke the ever-renewed miracle of nature, and in which seasons and landscapes are robed in strong nostalgia.Richard Strauss follows through the metaphors of the sun: darkening (Traum durch die Dämmerung), promising great future joys (Morgen) or eternal rest (Ruhe, meine Seele!); dreams of peace and beauty (Freundliche Vision) and the weariness of a fading life (Im Abendrot). This album reflects the black diamond of melancholy, and its three composers complement each other delightfully. © François Hudry/Qobuz

When Zemlinsky died in 1942, there was no telling if or when posthumous recognition of his work would take place. Typical though his reception was for the 20th century – pockmarked by two world wars and Nazi rule, it remains remarkable just how differently Zemlinsky, born on October 14th, 1871, has been judged throughout the last 150 years. He had his works premiered at the Vienna Court Opera by Mahler. He commanded the utmost respect of his pupil and brother-inlaw Arnold Schoenberg. He was celebrated as the director of Prague’s New German Theatre. And yet, still in his lifetime, his work succumbed to political and stylistic changes; he had been persecuted and was forgotten. We’ve sort of come full circle: Zemlinsky is once again considered a great composer whose works don’t have to shy away from comparison with those of his famous contemporaries and whose music gets performed at least occasionally. With this special "Anniversary Edition" Capriccio revere the huge spectrum of his outstanding musically compositions. © Capriccio
