Kiyotaka Sugiyama

Japanese singer-songwriter Kiyotaka Sugiyama was born on July 17, 1959, in the city of Yokohama. The son of a police officer and a shamisen teacher, he dreamed of becoming a manga artist but ultimately decided to devote himself to music after becoming obsessed with The Beatles’ Let It Be. In 1980, his band Kyutipanchosu won the 19th edition of the Yamaha Popular Song Contest (commonly known as Popcon) with the song “Gospel No Yoru,” catching the attention of producer Koichi Fujita. After changing their name to Kiyotaka Sugiyama & Omega Tribe, the group went on to become one of the lead exponents of the sophisticated city pop genre, releasing five LPs between 1983 and 1985. “Sayonara no Ocean,” his first solo single, appeared in 1986 and climbed to Number 3 on the Oricon charts. The song was included in his first full-length Beyond… (1986), which debuted at Number 1 in Japan. This success was followed by a hat-trick of Number 1 singles in 1987 with the songs “Mizu no Naka no Answer,” “Shade,” and “Kaze no Lonely Way,” as well as a second LP titled Realtime to Paradise. In the following decades, Kiyotaka Sugiyama continued to hone his suave brand of J-pop on charting releases like Sprinkle (1990), Moonset – Yasashiku Nareru Made (1991), Add Water (1994), Ocean Side Company (2000), I Am Me (2013), and Ocean (2016). In 2022, the compilation 35 (+3) Summers Kiyotaka Sugiyama Singles Collection entered the Billboard Japan Albums chart at Number 46.
