Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam
Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam (January 25, 1958) – known as Kavita Krishnamurthy or Kavita Subramaniam – was born as Sharada into a Tamil Iyer family in New Delhi, India and took her first steps into music under the tutelage of her aunt. She was schooled in Hindustani classical music as a child and picked up various medals at school competitions. A fortuitous placing to record a song for Bengali film Shriman Prithviraj in 1971, with Lata Mangeshkar as co-singer, and a move to Bombay helped to pave the way for her future career as a playback singer. Five years later, she recorded her first song, "Aayega Aanewala," with Vilayat Khan as the composer, for Bollywood drama film Kadambari. She went on to record songs in numerous languages, including Rajasthani, Bengali, Kannada – with her first Kannada song arriving in 1978, "Ondanondu Kaaladaga," for the epic film Ondanondu Kaladalli – Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, English and more. She came into her own as a playback singer during the 1990s, notably singing in the 1994 Indian Hindi patriotic romance film, 1942: A Love Story, and working with legendary directors like A. R. Rahman and Ismail Darbar. As well as pouring her voice into devotional music and pop over the years, she has made numerous television appearances, including the reality television singing competition Rising Star Season 2 in 2018.
