Jeremy Young

The British pianist Jeremy Young has been especially noteworthy for chamber music performances as well as for strong careers as a solo pianist and as an educator. He is Head of Chamber Music at the Royal Northern Conservatory of Music in Manchester. Young was born in London. He studied as a youth at the Purcell School of Music, going on for degrees at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music. From the beginning he studied both piano and chamber music; his teachers in the former field included Vladimir Ovchinnikov, Frank Wibaut, and Christopher Elton, and as a chamber music player he studied not only with chamber music players like Menahem Pressler (at Canada's Banff Center for the Performing Arts) and the members of the Amadeus String Quartet, but with pianist Andras Schiff in his capacity as a chamber player. Young has had a distinguished career as a solo recitalist, appearing in such top venues as Wigmore Hall and Southbank Centre in the U.K., Lincoln Center in New York, and the Esplanade Concert Hall in Singapore. He has toured China (including Hong Kong and Macau), and Kazakhstan, as well as Europe and the U.S., and he is a familiar figure at music festivals in Britain. In 2006 he founded the Alfriston Summer Music Festival in the Sussex region. Young has been heard on the BBC 3, Classic FM, RTE Lyric FM, and CCTV China broadcast networks, among others. A founding member of the Ovid Ensemble and the Manchester Piano Trio, he has also collaborated with string players in duo sonatas and larger chamber genres with piano, working with the Finzi, Talich, and Navarra String Quartets, as well as such soloists as cellist Li-Wei Qin. Both as a soloist and as a chamber player Young has often been heard on recordings, including those on the EMI Asia, Decca, Meridian, Signum, Somm, and Naxos labels. In 2018, his recording of William Sterndale Bennett's Sextet in F sharp minor, with the Villiers Quartet and double bassist Leon Bosch, appeared on Naxos. In addition to his post as Head of Chamber Music at the Royal Northern Conservatory, he also holds the posts of Senior Piano Tutor and Head of the International Chamber Music Studio there; he also teaches at Chetham's School in Manchester and is a frequent guest instructor and examiner at other British universities.
