Gardel
During his lifetime, the singer Carlos Gardel (1890-1935) gave tango its letters of nobility, a musical genre then decried by self-righteous critics. Although his music is generally not very danceable and not much used in milongas, he is by far the most famous tango singer. He paved the way for his successor, Astor Piazzolla.
