David le Page

Violinist David Le Page is an adventurous musician who has pursued cross-genre projects in addition to traditional repertory. He is the artistic director and leader of the Orchestra of the Swan. Le Page was born on the island of Guernsey in the English Channel in 1971. He took up the violin at age seven, and when he was 12, he was admitted to the prestigious Yehudi Menuhin School in Stratford-upon-Avon. He won major prizes, including the BBC Young Musician of the Year and Yehudi Menuhin competitions, and went on for further studies in Bern, Switzerland, with Igor Ozim and in London with Sidney Griller. Since then, he has formed or participated in musical ensembles in various genres, including Baroque music, folk, jazz, experimental contemporary classical, rock, pop, and electronica. Groups he created include the Le Page Ensemble, The Harborough Collective, Subway Piranhas, and Mysterious Barricades (the last of these was named after a piece by François Couperin). He also joined the ten-piece group Propellor, which featured members of several folk bands, in creating a sonic landscape installation at the Snape Maltings Open Space. In 2013, Le Page created his own label, Harmony & Imagination Recordings, and began to release albums of his own compositions (The Reinvention of Harmony and Imagination, As the Crow Flies, Midwinter, The Book of Ebenezer, and Glimpses of the Seagull) as well as solo violin music (Between Heaven and Earth and Metamorphosis), and various collaborations, including one with composer/bandoneón player Eduardo García. The label also released an album of Chopin's music by pianist Viv McLean, with whom Le Page has often appeared in violin-and-piano duo concerts. Le Page has been notable for collaborations with top composers on world premiere performances. These have included John Woolrich, Thomas Adès, Huw Watkins, and Errollyn Wallen. In 2017, he and cellist Clare O'Connell created The Diving Bell, an experimental concert series mounted in small venues around Britain. The project brings together music from various genres, and concerts include three contrasting sets, the last one being a collaboration between all the performers. He reworked and performed The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album to mark its 50th anniversary. Le Page is the artistic director of the Stratford-on-Avon-based Orchestra of the Swan, with which he also performs on violin. With that group, he has released several albums, including Echoes (2023) and Earthcycle (2024), as well as Entranced, a compilation of the group's earlier mixtapes.
