Creation Rebel

The spacy, mystical dub reggae of British group Creation Rebel is immersed in science fiction as well as Rastafarian traditions. Originally formed as the backing band for the legendary Prince Far I, Creation Rebel was one of Adrian Sherwood's first endeavors as a producer. Their early albums, such as 1978's Dub from Creation, appeared on his Hitrun imprint, and the musicians served as the backing band for many acts on his subsequent label On-U Sound. The group's left-field opus, the cinematic suite Starship Africa, appeared in 1980, and Creation Rebel released a few more records before disbanding following Prince Far I's untimely death in 1983. After a four-decade absence, Creation Rebel re-formed and issued the triumphant Hostile Environment in 2023. One of the earliest releases by Prince Far I, Crytuff Dub Encounter Chapter 1, was credited to the Arabs and featured musicians such as guitarist Crucial Tony, bassist Clinton Jack, keyboard player Bigga Morrison, and drummer Fish Clark. Much of this lineup played on Dub from Creation, the first Creation Rebel effort, which was engineered by Dennis Bovell and released in March 1980. John Peel championed the record on his influential radio program, naming it the best British dub album he'd ever heard, and the band backed Prince Far I on his Peel Session. Close Encounters of the Third World, with Style Scott joining as the group's drummer, appeared later in the year, and Rebel Vibrations followed in 1979. The supremely trippy, ahead-of-its-time Starship Africa arrived in 1980, two years after it was recorded. The rootsier Psychotic Junkanoo was released in 1981, with John Lydon making an appearance on the song "Mother Don't Cry." This was followed by the Cherry Red-issued Threat to Creation, a collaboration with another Sherwood-produced collective, New Age Steppers. Lows & Highs was released in 1982, but Creation Rebel ceased activity after the tragic murder of Prince Far I in 1983 (although a limited cassette titled Return from Space surfaced around 1984). Creation Rebel's albums were periodically reissued over the years, and On-U Sound collected tracks from the group's early albums on two Historic Moments releases in 1994. Vibrations: 1978-1982, a digital-only anthology, appeared in 2017. Forty years after the group initially disbanded, Creation Rebel returned in 2023, consisting of Crucial Tony, drummer Eskimo Fox, and percussionist Magoo, with Sherwood behind the board. Hostile Environment, the group's comeback effort, featured vocal appearances by Prince Far I as well as Daddy Freddy and Denise Sherwood (Adrian's daughter). All of the group's On-U albums were collected on the 2024 box set High Above Harlesden 1978-2023.
