Cat Janice

Cat Janice (Catherine Janice Ipsan) was a classically trained American alt-pop singer, songwriter, and producer with an ethereal voice and a punchy, groove-laden sound. The Virginia native's assured blend of alt-rock, disco-pop, and EDM was just gaining momentum when Janice was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive type of cancerous tumor in 2022. She began working on a set of songs that addressed the tumultuous period, which included surgery and chemotherapy, and the myriad emotions it wrought. The resulting Modern Medicine, which contained the powerful ballads "Strawberry Morning" and "Wishing I Was You" and the resilient dance-pop banger "Chill the fck Out," appeared in 2023. Later that year, after finding that the cancer had metastasized to her lung, Janice married her boyfriend, Kyle Higginbotham. On January 19, 2024, just four days after entering hospice, she released the ebullient single "Dance Outta My Head." Inspired by a spontaneous line, "Dance until you love me," that she and her seven-year-old son sang in the car one day, the song became an international hit, reaching number one in multiple countries and winning the Robert Allen Award from the ASCAP Foundation. Cat Janice died on February 28, 2024, at the age of 31.
