Austin Lucas
Singer and songwriter Austin Lucas first made a name for himself in punk rock before striking out as a solo artist and embracing the country and folk sounds that were his first love. After stints in the bands Twenty Third Chapter, Rune, and K10 Prospect, Lucas struck out on his own with his first solo album, 2006's The Common Cold, in which he moved away from electric rock & roll and steeped himself in acoustic sounds with a strong bluegrass influence. Since then, he's divided his time between his native Indiana and the Czech Republic, and while he's occasionally dabbled in country-influenced rock, as on 2013's Stay Reckless, for the most part he's dedicated himself to introspective folk-oriented material, reaching a high point with 2018's Immortal Americans.
Austin Lucas was born and raised in Bloomington, Indiana. His father, Bob Lucas, was a professional musician who played guitar, banjo, and fiddle; he recorded several solo albums, was a member of the group Eclectricity, and wrote songs that were recorded by Alison Krauss, Sam Bush, and the New Grass Revival. Young Austin learned how to sing harmonies from his father, and spent six years as a vocalist with the Indiana University Children's Choir. In his teens, Austin discovered punk rock and performed with a succession of bands. From 1997 to 1999, he played bass with Twenty Third Chapter, sang lead with Rune from 1998 to 2000, and sang lead and played guitar with K10 Prospect from 2000 to 2004. During his last year in K10 Prospect, Lucas shuttled between the United States and the Czech Republic, finally settling in Prague in 2004, where he played guitar with the group Guided Cradle.
While in Prague, Lucas began rediscovering the American roots music he grew up with, and started collaborating with fellow songwriter Chuck Ragan. In 2006, Austin cut his first solo album, The Common Cold, and the following year he dropped a split single with Chuck Ragan; Austin also brought out his second solo LP, Putting the Hammer Down. A full-length collaboration with Ragan, Bristle Ridge, arrived in 2008, as did a solo EP, At War with Freak Folk. After 2009's Somebody Loves You and 2011's A New Home in the Old World, Lucas struck a deal with the American roots music label New West Records; his first album for his new sponsor, Stay Reckless, was an upbeat effort that reflected the influence of country and rock more than folk. By the time Lucas completed 2016's Between the Moon and the Midwest, he had returned to Indiana after struggling with divorce and a drinking problem in Prague. A clean and sober Lucas wrote a set of songs that found him looking closely at himself and the struggles of his hometown, and they formed the basis of 2018's Immortal Americans, co-produced by Will Johnson of Centro-Matic and engineered by Steve Albini.
