عمر سليمان
The destiny of Omar Souleyman, born in a Syrian village in 1966, took an unexpected turn when this wedding singer was discovered and launched to an international audience. A fixture at major festivals, the mustachioed musician in sunglasses revealed to Western ears his explosive blend of popular dabka music and electro on the albums Highway to Hassake (2007), Dabke 2020 (2009) and Jazeera Nights (2010). Released in 2013, the album Wenu Wenu sees him collaborate with producer Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet. A refugee in Turkey since the unrest in his country, Omar Souleyman recorded Bahdeni Nami (2015) with Four Tet, Gilles Peterson and Modeselektor.
