"D'ombres..." This program is a continuation of the first album dedicated to Debussy's Études, which revealed pianist Elodie Vignon to the public. Dutilleux has a close relationship with Debussy in his sensory approach to music. Composed just after the Second World War, his Piano Sonata reminds us, in some aspects, of Claude Debussy's Pour le piano, also composed after another Great War. The composition of the Three Preludes, spread over a period of fifteen years, testifies to the composer's desire to change his style and syntax, making it less linear and traditional. Claude Ledoux emerges from the shadows and delivers a work that seeks to translate the world in which we live, a world of silence and sound in perpetual transformation. © Cyprès

For his first album with harmonia mundi, the young and brilliant Belgian pianist Julien Libeer opted for this incongruous Bach-Bartók double-header. He stumbled across the secret affinities that link these two composers while working on pieces by each of them in parallel. "There is a bitterness in them, a rejection of any and all affectation, but also polyphonic writing of extraordinary quality and a relationship to rhythm which renders them, if not identical, then at least complementary", the performer explained. And we have to admit: this project stands up pretty well. Julien Libeer brought the two together by way of the dance suite. French Suite n° 5 and  Partita n° 2 by J. S. Bach are brought up against Suite Op. 14 and the suite Out of Doors, a masterpiece of Bartók's piano music, offering five pastoral visions of the Hungary of the 1920s. As ever, Bartók's genius transcends his folk influences and works them magisterially into the modernity of his own language. Alongside his work as a soloist and concert musician, Julien Libeer takes part in pedagogical projects that aim to share music beyond the confines of the concert or the record, in particular across nine schools in the Molenbeek district of Brussels, where he has created a high-level choir with his friend Zeno Popescu, in the hope of passing on the music bug to the young people of the neighbourhood. © François Hudry/Qobuz

For years now the Concours International de piano d’Orléans is the time and the place of piano excellency and repertoire boldness. There we can hear the great works of the twentieth century and contemporary treasures. That’s what the young Maroussia Gentet does with this first disc published by B Records, invoking every nature strengths, from the lightest pianissimo to the most telluric furioso. © B Records

Freeze frame. On the sleeve of his album Révolution, David Kadouch is seated at the piano, hands in the air, looking like a shadow puppet. He is trying to stop time. His project here – surprising from an artist who is not yet 35 – is modelled on Annie Ernaux and her tale The Years. It's about trying to gather together a collection of important moments, in this case musical, and in so doing, to take his own place in history. The works chosen by David Kadouch for this concept album are linked to spectacular collective events, but also to individual consequences. Alongside from Beethoven's famous Sonata No.26, Op.81a, called "Les Adieux", more jaunty and ornamented than powerful and angry; Étude révolutionnaire, Op.10 No.12 by Chopin, we find Dussek's Sufferings of the Queen of France that Dussek composed two months after the execution of Marie-Antoinette of whom he had fond memories. The pretext for a series of contrasting pages in the form of a mini-drama without words, this work testifies to Dussek's attachment to the Queen through a genuine and sincere music with no effect whatsoever where one is almost surprised in certain passages that the subject is treated with more gentleness than tragedy and violence. The programme continues with Sonata 1.X.1905 by Janacek, and Debussy's Les Soirs illuminés par l’ardeur du charbon (a piece recently found behind a Comtoise clock to be rediscovered) and Feux d’artifice and finally Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues by Rzewski, an infernal toccata that bends towards the blues. True to the spirit of the works he performs, David Kadouch approaches this surprising program with eloquence. © Elsa Siffert/Qobuz

Invaluable sound documents from one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century. The third and final volume of the Berlin radio recordings by Cuban-born American pianist Jorge Bolet on audite presents repertoire novelties. With the exception of the Fledermaus paraphrase, all recordings are released for the first time. Once again, Bolet's performances document his universality and unceasing inquisitiveness, as well as his phenomenal musicianship and ability to adapt his virtuosity to diverse works. These recordings are therefore invaluable documents of a musician who today is justly considered one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century. This selection comprises works of Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Dello Joio, Franck, Godowsky, Grieg, Liszt and Schumann. Beethoven's Fifth Piano Concerto did not form part of Bolet's regular repertoire: it is the only live recording on this edition. Further highlights include Schumann's Third Piano Sonata as well as major works by Chopin, such as the complete Op. 25 Études, in Bolet's masterful, lyrical interpretations. As an "encore", Bolet plays Godowsky's Concert Paraphrase of Strauss' Die Fledermaus. © Audite
