Johannes Brahms’ consolatory Ein deutsches Requiem receives a fresh and considered interpretation from Daniel Reuss and the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century. This renowned orchestra took the decision – following the death, some years back, of Frans Brüggen – to retain its founder’s dynamic process of alternating concert tours with recordings. And dispensing with the need for having a principal conductor, the orchestra now works with a range of musicians according to the repertoire being performed. Such a conductor is Daniel Reuss, who is also the artistic director of the Cappella Amsterdam, the choir which has frequently been appearing alongside the orchestra in recent times. A well-received reading of the Beethoven Missa Solemnis involving Reuss and the orchestra was issued by Glossa in 2017 and these musical forces have now turned their attention to Johannes Brahms’ pillar of religious music. Taped in the Rotterdam De Doelen concert hall this new recording involves Carolyn Sampson (soprano) and André Morsch (baritone) as its two soloists, in a version which attempts, as far as it is possible, to get close – in terms of tonal colours, interpretation and tempi – to Brahms’ original intentions. This extraordinary work, here maintaining a sweeping and moving spirit for some 70 minutes, contains texts from Martin Luther’s German translation of the Bible and, it is thought, was inspired by the loss of both the composer’s mother and also that of Robert Schumann. © Glossa

Alpha and the Festival of Aix-en-Provence continue their Young Talents series, in which Laureates of the Académie of the Aix Festival are each accorded an album. The American baritone John Chest enjoys a brilliant career that has already led him to Glyndebourne Festival and the BBC Proms. In partnership with the Brazilian pianist Marcelo Amaral, he presents Die schöne Magelone by Johannes Brahms. Among all the wealth of Lieder that Brahms composed, this is his only real song cycle. Brahms had known these popular tales since his childhood, but it was thanks to Schumann that he discovered the novel published in 1797 by Ludwig Tieck, entitled "The Love Story of the Fair Magelone and Count Peter of Provence". The work is representative of the poetic, idealised reinvention of the Middle Ages so characteristic of German romanticism: stories of star-crossed love, that usually end happily… ‘What strikes the listener most of all is the song cycle’s epic scale – it is a veritable pocket opera, supported by pianistic writing of great complexity,’ writes Timothée Picard in the libretto accompanying this disc – which is illustrated by an original design by Maia Flore, a laurate photographer of the HSBC Foundation: her poetic universe has already featured in the preceding number of the series, "Black is the colour" (debut album of Anna Stéphany). © Alpha Classics/Outhere

Hi-Res Booklet Onderscheidingen 5 de Diapason
The cellist Pieter Wispelwey and the pianist Paulo Giacometti have decided to record six albums comprising the complete works for duet of Brahms and Schubert. In other words, the pieces written for an instrument and piano. The instrument in question could be the cello, or the violin, the viola, etc. Because can a virtuoso cellist really resist the temptation to dip their toes into other repertoires than their own? After all, we know full well that the composers themselves wouldn't hesitate to transcribe, or authorise a transcription, of their own work for other instruments. And so here is the fourth volume of this collection, which hinges on Brahms's Sonate Op. 78, which was first written for violin in G major, here transcribed into D major by Paul Klengel in 1897; as well as the First Sonata, originally for clarinet Op. 120, by the very same Brahms. Of the latter work, we know that the composer himself transcribed it for the viola, and this transcription formed the basis for Pieter Wispelwey's own re-reading - very close to the viola part, within which he has simply transposed certain uncomfortably high passages down an octave. By way of overture we have Schubert's Rondo in B minor (1826), written for violin and piano, here brought down an octave (or two) for cello, although the change doesn't make any difference at all to the harmonic perception. © SM/Qobuz
