In the Shadows…but whose shadow is it? Richard Wagner’s, naturally. Under this mysterious title, Michael Spyres continues his exploration of the tenor repertoire, proposing a selection of arias from French, Italian, and German operas of the first half of the 19th century, allowing him to emphasize the diversity of the influences that forged Wagner’s art.

With the backing of Christophe Rousset and his Talens Lyriques, the American tenor embarks on a journey from Méhul’s Joseph (1807) to the realm of Lohengrin (1850), illuminating not only Wagner's renowned compositions but also shedding light on lesser-known gems that were equally integral to his esthetic. In doing so, he lays the groundwork for the opera of the 19th century, unveiling a tapestry of musical treasures that have long lingered in obscurity.

This record thus gives us the opportunity to listen to the captivating interpretations of an artist at the peak of his craft, and in his repertoire of choice: the heroic and virtuosic bel canto of the opere serie of Rossini (Elisabetta, regina d’Inghilterra, 1815), Bellini (Norma, 1831), and Meyerbeer (Il Crociato in Egitto, 1824), as well as French opera (Auber’s La Muette de Portici, 1828) and, slightly more unexpectedly, some of the first German operas, including Weber’s Fidelio (1814) and Der Freischütz (1821), alongside other lesser-known gems, such as Spontini’s Agnes von Hohenstaufen (1829), and Marschner’s highly romantic Hans Heiling (1833), which is not unrelated to Wagner’s first opera, The Fairies, composed that same year…after Rienzi’s unforgettable prayer, the album closes with a sublime sending-off from Lohengrin, which still has us under its spell… © Julia Le Brun/Qobuz
