Hi-Res Booklet Onderscheidingen Diapason d'or - Gramophone Editor's Choice
Fascinated by the Marian cult, whose contradictions he loves to highlight, Paul McCreesh offers here a purely choral programme, leaving behind the charms of orchestral instrumentation. Both virgin and mother, a symbol of both chastity and fertility, the figure of Mary also holds a strong erotic potential, which has not escaped Paul McCreesh, who designed this album by choosing English composers from the Renaissance to the present day, without any real disparity in style becoming apparent, proving the strength and continuity of British choral music. The great English movement of the rediscovery of polyphony in the 20th and 21st centuries doesn't stop at exploring the music of the Renaissance, but also rediscovering, and employing in new compositions, the beautiful medieval words set to music, which have been passed unamended down the centuries. Returning to the sources of Western music, Paul McCreesh asks whether the sudden popularity of religious music comes from a subliminal desire to recreate a world in which almost everyone believed in God. Fighting against a certain ethereal and angelic approach to religious choral music, McCreesh compares high polyphony to the architecture of a vast cathedral, trying to bring out its visceral side, on certain pieces at least. Listeners will note that this album contains the world's first recording of a new work commissioned by Paul McCreesh and the Gabriel Consort, written by the young British composer Matthew Martin. A Rose Magnificat (which also gives the whole album its name) was written for double choir and contains interjections from a medieval text. The composer wrote the piece in a "Stravinskian" manner, as he put it, while searching out Eastern and Byzantine flavours. © François Hudry/Qobuz

After the volumes dedicated to Vivaldi's great instrumental cycles, La Stravaganza (2004), La Cetra (2012) and L’Estro armonico (2015), English violinist Rachel Podger continues her work with her Brecon Baroque ensemble to bring out this version of the Four Seasons, which is rounded off with three violin concertos. Brecon Baroque is an offshoot of the festival of the same name that takes place every year at the end of October, in Wales. A magical place at the confluence of two rivers, where the spectacular countryside draws visitors every year in their hundreds. A passionate fan of the music of Vivaldi and Biber, Rachel Podger, who studied in Germany, demonstrates through her performances just how much the Red Priest's music (and her herself, following Biber) can cloak itself in the mysterious and bizarre, to the point that Vivaldi appears here as a distant descendant of the mannerists from the late Renaissance and early Baroque period. This is a particularly interesting and successful take.

After several albums respectively dedicated to Liszt's Transcendental Études or Mussogorsky and Schumann, or to Concertos by Tchaikovsky (the First) and Prokofiev (the Second) for the Myrios Classics label, Russian-American pianist Kirill Gerstein is diving into the colourful and rhythmical world of Gershwin. Happily, he has chosen the Jazz Band (1924) version of Rhapsody in Blue, which he has transformed into an almost-cubist work, in perfect symbiosis with the equally-keen work of David Robertson: the piano-playing is really angular, sometimes chilling; the brass recalls the most modernist work of Bartók or Prokofiev or the new American music, at the start of the 1920s. The same goes for 1925's Concerto in F, the extraordinary Earl Wild's cool playing under the direction of Arthur Fiedler (RCA, 1959) dissipates with Gerstein and Robertson, to make way for more percussive sounds. Kirill Gerstein also offers - this album being made up of recordings made in concert - various arrangements (or paraphrases) of some of the more famous American songs, including a particularly juicy I Got Rhythm from Earl Wild. A particularly stimulating album for the winter months. © 2018 Théodore Grantet/Qobuz

Rachel Podger, “the queen of the baroque violin” (Sunday Times), has established herself as a leading interpreter of the Baroque and Classical music periods. A creative programmer, she is the founder and Artistic Director of Brecon Baroque Festival and her ensemble Brecon Baroque. This new album brings together the compositions by four violinist-composers, three Italians and one German, all born during the last quarter of the 17th Century and who all died (except Vivaldi, who died younger) around the 1760s. These works explore the imagination of the then revolutionary form that was the Sonata for violin and continuo. Weaving together stylised ancient dances and the more Germanic preludic tradition, these Sonatas transport us to a world of musical amazement. Rachel Podger says: “The four composers’ connections read like a popular comedy! Violin virtuosos Verachini and Pisendel had an argument which resulted in Veracini flying into a rage and throwing himself from first floor a balcony, damaging his foot and limping forever after. Verachini amazed Tartini with his astonishingly smooth bowing technique, whereupon Tartini locked himself away to practice. Pisendel studied with Tartini and Vivaldi...” Let us add that one of Vivaldi’s Sonatas here recorded is dedicated to Pisendel. Podger gives great unity to those works, composed all around Europe at a time when powerful musical influences were continuously changing styles and fashions.
