When the German philosopher Emmanuel Kant theorised the dualism of man (and woman) in the seventeenth century, he was far from imagining what slowthai would make of the concept 350 years later. The English rapper, a dirty boy from across the Channel, too often pigeonhold as white trash, proves in this album that there is also such a thing as the duality of the artist. There is one who lets go, and there is one who surrenders. This is why Tyron (the title is taken from slowthai's real name) is divided into two parts. First of all, the side that shows that his anger is still there. With hard-hitting tracks such as Wot, with a sonic palette created by his favourite beatmaker Bleu Daisy, and Skepta's remarkable appearance on Cancelled, this first salvo satisfied early fans, those who had felt a rare strength in the rapper's performances. Just listen to Vex to be convinced. But then, slowthai takes a romantic turn. A radical change of sounds, intentions, with melodies out in front, speaking with a heart full of melancholy, friendship, love and also unease. If the track feel, produced by Mount Kimbie and recorded as a duet with the great James Blake is the archetype of this new musical direction (with its textual reference to Yesterday by The Beatles), it all makes sense come the last track of the album, adhd. This is sadness. And when the time comes to finally close out the tracklist, he becomes again, for one last verse, the angry and aggressive rapper that he is.
