The first singles by slowthai were raw bursts of energy, blending grime and drill with a punk attitude, and delivering scathing lyrics addressing the struggles of British youth. His debut album far surpasses the promise of those early tracks, tackling similar topics but with a much sharper focus. The direct, concise album's songs reflect the state of Brexit-era England, particularly the issues faced by those living in poverty, such as broken homes, drug addiction, and the widening wage gap. The MC openly mocks Queen Elizabeth at the end of the title track, which also contains a jarring, angular grime beat and a reference to Dizzee Rascal's game-changing debut, Boy in Da Corner. The album's intense, sometimes traumatic lyrics are spiked with an acerbic sense of humor, as well as a surprising vulnerability, particularly on songs like "Peace of Mind" and "Northampton's Child," where slowthai thanks his mother for raising him, especially after his father left when he was three. Skepta guests on one of the album's harshest moments, the drill track "Inglorious," and slowthai's voice raises in desperation on similarly aggressive tracks such as "Grow Up" and "Missing." The album's production darts from skittish electro-punk (the Mura Masa-assisted "Doorman") to sparkling downtempo ("Gorgeous") to lush garage with acoustic guitars ("Toaster"), each fitting a different facet of the MC's personality. Fresh and exhilarating, Nothing Great About Britain firmly establishes slowthai as one of U.K. rap's most relevant artists.

Reggaeton in 10 Albums

A combination of Jamaican dancehall, American hip-hop, Caribbean rhythms and Spanish wit, reggaeton has, since its birth in the early 90s, shaken the world of pop music time and time again. From DJ Playero’s first mixtapes to Daddy Yankee’s “Barrio Fino” and Don Chezina’s “Tra-Tra-Tra, Puerto Rican musicians and their Colombian counterparts in Medellin have done their utmost to take over the world. In the last decade, they have done just that thanks to artists such as Luis Fonsi, J. Balvin and Bad Bunny. Read on for 10 of the genre’s most important albums. Reggaeton won’t be going anywhere any time soon.

Kamasi Washington, the Sax of Angels

After his major success with a triple album, he went on to repeat this with a double one! Kamasi Washington charms and intrigues well beyond the jazz sphere. Working with Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg, and most importantly as the head of the West Coast Get Down collective, the charismatic saxophonist from Los Angeles brings an incredible wave of excitement to the contemporary jazz scene.

Warp, 30 Years of Groundbreaking Music

Warp, the record label which led to the blossoming of some of the most boundary-pushing artists of the electronic music scene, such as Aphex Twin, LFO, Boards of Canada, Autechre, and Squarepusher, now has their catalogue available on Qobuz. It’s the perfect opportunity to revisit the history of Britain’s best-respected independent label.
